How cute are they?!? The light calf was born around May 12th. The black calf was born a week later.
I just love babies. :)

We decided to try our hand at silage. What this is - in a nutshell - is wrapping bales of hay in a thick layer of plastic so that it's not exposed to air. Merriam Webster defines silage as "fodder converted into succulent feed for livestock through processes of anaerobic acid fermentation". The cattle graze on grass, but since it doesn't grow during the winter, (and they pretty much munch it down to the ground during this time), we're planning to supplement their diet with this high quality grass silage during the winter months. Here's Tim getting the hay bales ready to line up for the silage wrapper... ...and here is a shot of the rolled bales. When the row is done, it looks like a giant white caterpillar... To see how it works, check out this youtube.com video. (This is not our original video, but it will give you an idea of what this contraption looks like in action.) Farm equipment is so cool.
